What is Canada Travel Insurance, and why do you need it?

Canada is quickly becoming a popular hotspot for Brits heading abroad. The country welcomes around 900,000 travellers from the UK each year. While Canada is generally considered extremely safe, it has very high medical costs. That’s why it’s important to be covered if you’re planning a holiday there.

At All Clear, we’ll offer protection, even if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Plus, we cover lost luggage, cancelled holidays3, and travel delays.

Having Travel Insurance with proper medical cover is a must-have for Canada. Here’s why:

  • Healthcare costs in Canada are extremely high. A hospital stay can cost up to $4,000 (£2,230) per day, and a single visit to the emergency room can cost $1,000 (£570). There are no special healthcare arrangements for tourists, including British visitors. Having comprehensive Travel Insurance means you’re not left paying for these services out of your own pocket.
  • Popular activities like hiking, skiing, and biking can pose safety risks. If you need to be airlifted from a mountain to a hospital, the cost can be as high as $4,394 per hour (£2,500).
  • Canada experiences natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, and severe weather conditions. There are more than 8,000 wildfires in Canada each year. Our Travel Insurance protects you if you have to change plans due to extreme weather.

Don’t run the risk of a huge medical bill. Get peace of mind with Travel Insurance for Canada. At AllClear, we can cover: All medical conditions. All ages. All destinations. There’s a reason why 98% of our customers would recommend us to family and friends4.

What does AllClear’s Canada Travel Insurance cover?

Canada Travel Insurance from AllClear covers you against unexpected medical costs abroad. We offer up to unlimited cover for medical expenses and repatriation. This means you won’t have to worry about being able to come home in an emergency.

What’s covered?

  • Medical cover. AllClear policies include emergency medical cover, as well as medical costs for existing conditions. This includes prescription medication, medical emergencies and medical equipment.
  • Cancellation and curtailment3. Cover for your flight and accommodation costs if you have to cancel before you go. We’ll also cover you if you need to return home early following an emergency.
  • Your baggage. Protection against the cost of stolen, damaged or lost luggage and personal possessions. You can also choose to add extra cover for gadgets to your policy.
  • Travel delays and missed departures. If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the time. If you miss your flight, you’ll also be covered for accommodation and transport costs.
  • Personal liability. Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone. You also have cover if you damage their property while you’re away on holiday.
  • All ages. We believe Travel Insurance should be available to as many people as possible. That’s why our Travel Insurance has no upper age limit.

What’s not covered?

  • Deciding not to travel. We do not provide any cover if you can travel but choose not to.
  • Other regions. Your Canada Travel Insurance won’t cover you if you travel outside your chosen region. You can contact us to upgrade your policy anytime.
  • Claims below the value of excess. You’re not covered for claims that fall below the value of the excess stated in your policy
  • Medical conditions you fail to declare. You need to provide us with an accurate medical history when you buy Travel Insurance. This is so we can give you the right cover. This is especially vital for senior travellers and those with long-term illnesses.

Frequently Asked Questions on Canada Travel Insurance

Is Travel Insurance mandatory for Canada?

Visitors to Canada are not required to have Travel Insurance upon entry. However, it is strongly recommended due to the high cost of medical treatment in Canada.

If you’re visiting on a Super Visa or Working Holiday Visa, you’ll need to show proof of health insurance. This must cover medical care, hospitalisation, and repatriation for the entire duration of your stay in Canada.

How much is Travel Insurance for Canada?

The cost of Travel Insurance for Canada varies depending on you, your needs and your trip. The cost of your policy depends on a number of different factors, including:

  • Your age
  • Your medical history
  • Your destination – even within Canada
  • How long you’re going for

Does the GHIC cover Canada?

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) does not extend to Canada. It’s designed to provide healthcare cover within the European Economic Area and some other countries. If you’re visiting Canada, the UK Government recommends that you buy proper Travel Insurance with medical cover.

What Travel Insurance do you need for Canada?

The type of Travel Insurance you need for Canada depends on your specific circumstances. It can also be affected by the purpose of your visit. If you’re visiting for leisure, a Canada Travel Insurance policy will cover most activities. However, most standard Travel Insurance policies won’t cover adventure activities as standard. If you’re doing anything like hiking or diving, you’ll need adventurous activities cover.

Can you get combined Travel Insurance for the USA and Canada?

Worldwide Travel Insurance policies will usually cover Canada. An annual worldwide insurance policy that includes the USA will generally cover Canada, too.

At AllClear, we have two types of Worldwide Travel Insurance:

  • Cover anywhere in the world except the USA, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean
  • Cover anywhere in the world, including the USA, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean

Before you leave the UK, make sure that you have the right kind of Worldwide cover, including Canada. If you’re unsure, check the wording in your policy documents.
